The Conch Republic
Conch Republic is a state of mind with pirates, smugglers, and escape of your everyday life. Ernest Hemingway, six-toed cats and a bar called Sloppy Joe's have influenced the Conch Republic's ( MARGARITAVILLE ) rich history as much as sunsets, Caribbean waters, and tropical nights.
What the locals call "Islamorada Beach" is actually a wide sandbar jutting out into the ocean close to Holiday Isle. There's only one way to get there - by boat.The sandbar is like 1/2 mile off shore. The sandbar is the mother of all raft-up locations. One who has been there has seen both sides of the channel were jam packed, people and boats. Depending upon the time of year (Memorial Day, Labor Day, 4th of July) it is PACKED. There must be 2500 boats in an area where 1000 boats is full.Easily accessible, the beach is also a popular anchorage for small boats, Jet Skis and kayaks. There are groups at these Regattas. These people are there at 9am on Saturday, Sunday or holiday. They put in a full day and night of partying. It is the place to party and people watch. My crew and I party pretty hard but these guys put us to shame. Nothing like hanging out at the "sand bar" with friends and family.

The island of Key Largo
The islands of Keys are exposed, fossilized remnant of a coral reef that was formed during a period of higher sea level and then uncovered and eroded during a subsequent ice age. The highest elevation is a slight ridge forming the spine of the island, which rises to as high as about 15 feet. The land slopes from the spine down to sea level on the oceanside and bayside.
Though most of the Florida Keys remained remote and inaccessible until well into the 20th century, their history glitters with romantic tales of pirates, fortunes gleaned from unfortunate shipwrecks, brief heydays for several island cities, struggling pioneer farmers and occasional military occupation. It also holds its share of tragedy resulting from settlers' encounters with hostile Indians, yellow-fever-bearing mosquitoes, dangerous hurricanes and unpredictable seas.
Ponce de León : Florida's First Spanish Explorer
Juan Ponce de León was the first Spanish explorer to arrive in Florida. Early Spanish explorers were known as conquistadors (kahn-KEYS-ta-dawrz) or "conquerors." While there are no official records, historians believe that Ponce de León was born in 1460 in San Tervas de Campos, Spain.
He was in search of new lands and treasures. He had also heard of a mythical fountain of youth. Indians spoke of a legendary, magical spring whose water was believed to make older people young again.
