When you hit Key Largo, you’ll begin to understand. As you leave Miami’s urban grid, the pressures of the mainland fade, and the habits of civilization (going to work, wearing shoes and socks) will start to seem faintly ridiculous. Like the legendary nonconformists—from smugglers and pirates to Ernest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffet—who came to the Florida Keys and found that they didn’t care to leave, you’ll soon succumb to the mystique of this necklace of palm-fringed coral rock islands. The descendants of Hemingway’s six-toed cat still prowl his garden and each sunset is a cause for major revelry.
When Jimmy Buffett sang of “wasting away again in Margaritaville,” he could well have been referring to the Florida Keys, a chain of islands, more than 100 miles long, connected by bridges, that constitutes most of Monroe County. A laid-back lifestyle permeates the Keys, a kind of America gone Caribbean, with an emphasis on tiki-bar socializing and sun worship (though not the beach-blanket kind; most Keys seafront is too rocky for that).

Keys' residents range from Indians following bison and elephants south after the Ice Age, to pirates on the open seas, to sturdy farmers and fishermen building houses from coral rock and driftwood, to Ernest Hemingway, to Jimmy Buffett. Each age, each group has left a mark on the land and the people, making the Conch Republic interesting and unique place it is today.
